Alumni Meeting 2011
What is the German and European foreign-policy stance on the most recent developments in the Arab world? In the view of representatives of leading German think tanks, what are the new challenges and opportunities for the Arab world’s democratic future, and what about the current situation of economic cooperation with North Africa and the Gulf states? Where can and should we help? These and other questions were discussed at a four-day alumni meeting of 32 diplomats from the Middle East and North Africa who had taken part in further-training seminars organized by the Federal Foreign Office over the last 10 years. Participants came not only from their home countries but also from very distant posts such as Seoul and Kuala Lumpur.

Africa – a further step towards the future

Young diplomats at their farewell reception
“There is no such thing as Africa!“ Georg Brunold stated in his book published in 1994. What he meant to say is that there is no single word or idea that could comprise Africa's cultural, regional and ethnic plurality. The around one billion people now living in 54 countries on the African continent belong to approximately 3000 ethnic groups and speak more than 2000 different languages.

The participants of the 5th Executive Seminar for Diplomats from Africa reflected this enormous diversity in part. Never forgetting their “common denominator“, representatives from 21 countries discussed and argued during the six-week programme from their distinct personal, academic and national perspectives. They exchangedexperiences and gathered valuable skills for future postings.
